“The Lady Pirates of Captain Bree” book
by Martin A. Follose with music and lyrics by Bill Francoeur, and directed
by Engela Edwards, opens this month at the Bastrop Opera House. This
is a large cast swashbuckling musical comedy, with a host of hysterical
characters on deck and a spectacular Bill Francoeur score. “Lady
Pirates” is an audacious tale on the high seas as Captain Bree and her
female pirate crew take Captain Jennings' ship. This fun comic musical
is complete with dance, deck swabbing, plank walking, and even romance.
The cast came from auditions held in Bastrop
and Austin. The two ships’ captains are musical actors from Austin,
Philip Robert Kreche and Christina Leidel. “They make a great romantic
duo, and their voices are terrific together,” said director Engela Edwards
and the rest of the cast hardily agreed.
Many of the cast members from “Big Bad Musical,”
“Wonderland,” “OZ!,” and “No Strings Attached,” (also Bill Francouer musicals
and played at the Opera House) are also in “Lady Pirates” including
Alana Adams, Alicia Gust, Athene Fuex, Cindy Thompson, Jennifer Sitton,
Jon-Michael Williford, Michelle Billett, Lisa Holcomb, Monica Miller, and
Susan Keys.
Also performing are Rachel Edwards, Keaton
and Landon Holcomb, and Ethan Glass who have trained and toured with the
Bastrop Teen Trouring Troupe for years. Elsie Uribe returns to play
the lovely Jo. The two young children in the cast are Jared and Lauren
Ballejos who have been performing on the Opera House stage since they were
four and five years old and will also star in “Wonderland!” later this
month at the Opera House.
The cast is rounded out with newcomers to
the Opera House stage. Joyce Leatherwood came to auditions at the
recommendation of a neighbor, and plays both a hilarious prisoner and an
Admiral. Dave and Kerri Daughety are familiar with the Opera House,
because they’ve seen shows, volunteered, and their children have performed
here. David Smith was lured into the show by the thought of getting
to play a pirate.
“Both the audiences, the cast, and I have
enjoyed all Francoeur musicals we’ve done here. I chose this particular
script to showcase the enormous amount of talent we have in the area.
I also chose it because everyone wants to be a pirate at sometime.
My hope is that even the audience will shows up in costume!” said Engela.
