FAQ's
Frequently asked questions about the movement classes.
1.  I've been asked what a stage movement class entails.
Here are some of my thoughts on the subject.
We start a new class only once a year.

The kids in the stage-movement class learn all sorts of things.  After a little training and confidence building, I hope we'll have a corps of kids that would like to perform.

Last-year's Stage-Movement kids performed in 4 EASY Theatre shows (2 written for the kids, one adapted for the kids, and a private showing of scenes).  They also had the opportunity to tech and perform in 3 community theatre shows produced by Earth & Sky Acting Co.:  Tell Me about Amelia, Alice in Wonderland, and 8-TRACKS (no disco).  The troupe is in rehearsal for their 5th show Shubert's Last Sarenade.

Most people start with the show and find people that will fit the roles.  We start with the kids then find or create shows fit the needs of the performers.

Some children don't like to perform, but love to learn new things.  They are welcome, also.

I would say that the main difference between stage movement and dance classes is:  A dancer usually is choreographed; and an actor, for the most part, choreographs himself, except when he's dancing.  Learning body control helps an actor use his body as a tool to express emotion.

I know some of the kids seem to be having trouble with the DANCE word, but I'm choreographer and that is what I do.

There will be more than just dancing, but yes we are going to dance, count music, learn routines, do characterizations,  improvisations, mime, and breathing exercises.

The students will be exposed to different types of movement, and forms of dance.  I hope that they find it rewarding and interesting.

2.  Is this class for me?
Each person brings unique gifts to a class and takes from the class something that is unique to himself.  You  won't know until you try, if this is something you might like.  I hope it will be a very positive experience for everyone.  I won't take it personally if you find that this isn't your cup of tea.
3.  My teenager is taking the Stage Movement, Makeup, Play Analysis, or Acting Workshop classes.  Can my slightly younger child take the class with them?
**This also applies to the Creative Movement class.
I make exceptions for siblings.  You know your child best.  I don't want a child thinking they aren't very good at something and giving up; when if they weren't comparing themselves to children who were so much older, they wouldn't have a problem.  Some children  would see being the youngest child in class as a challenge and others would find it frustrating.  Please, consider this.

Play Analysis 2 (FULL)
Believing that plays were meant to be seen, we read aloud complete plays during the class time, make an effort to see plays, and discuss what we have read and seen.  Note: not everyone sees all the plays, but we do discuss them in class.  Here is a list of what we saw and read last semester.  What we won't decide what we will read this semester until we work with the kids.  We work from library books, and we share scripts.  There isn't any expense involved for the kids.

North Village Branch Library 2139 W. Anderson Lane, Austin (512) 458-2239 on the 2nd and 3rd Thursdays

and

another Library on the other Thursdays.

History of Film (FULL)
What
History of Film (for age 13 and up) will look at film clips from early silent films through the present, and learn about how the art of film-making has developed.  Hopefully we'll be able to watch some films in their entirety.  There may be some additional reading or research in history as we'll be learning about the films in relation to historical events.  We will also learn about the use of sound, editing techniques, lighting, theme, storyboarding, cinematography, etc.  It would be a good opportunity for class presentation and/or written work.

Access to a VCR is recommended, as students will need to rent and watch
assigned videos.

Most films we discuss will have been made for adults, and thus may examine themes of political conflict, fractured relationships, or violence.  Leslie is rating the class PG-13 - it's for ages 13 and up.

Email Leslie or call her at 302-3243.

PLAY Group
Believing that plays were meant to seen.  We've created a group of performers that like to see shows as well as be in them.  We usually discuss the shows we've seen immediately after or during the following Play-Analysis Class.

Usually we try to attend the performances together.  Because of schedule conflicts we have also attended the same show but on different nights.

Others are welcome to join us for any or all of the shows.

Sometimes we see shows on short notice, but here are a few dates we know.

Austin Lyric Opera Dress Rehearsals

We plan to attend the dress rehearsals for the next 3 operas.  Students of any of the above class may attend with us.  Or you can organize it for your homeschool family.  For more information go to my opera dress rehearsal page.
